How Can Periodontal Dentistry Impact Your Life?

Periodontal (Gum) Treatments in Kew East

Gum health is essential to maintaining a healthy smile. Our dentists at General and Cosmetic Dentistry focus on maintaining healthy gums to achieve optimum oral health.

Oral-Systemic Conditions

With each passing year, researchers discover additional links between gum health and the overall health of your body. Periodontal disease is an infection in gum tissue that leads to bleeding, inflammation, and possible tooth loss. Since it is inflammatory in nature, it can have a negative impact on overall health and has been linked to:

  • Heart conditions
  • Complications with diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Low birth weight in babies born to mothers with periodontal disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

While more information is needed regarding the cause and effect of periodontal disease and the body, our team strives to provide the type of comprehensive dentistry and periodontal treatment that promotes optimum health.

Different Stages of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease most often occurs due to neglect such as poor home care or missed dental cleanings. Other factors can affect the health of your gums including:

  • Medications
  • Dry mouth
  • Reduced dexterity
  • Poor diet
  • Medical conditions
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy

Early stage gum disease, called gingivitis, is characterised by redness, inflammation, and bleeding. Gums may feel sensitive or painful when brushing, flossing, or eating. At this early stage, gum disease may be reversible with improved home care and regular dental cleanings designed to remove tartar and bacteria from between the teeth and gums.

As gum disease progresses into periodontitis, additional symptoms such as tooth mobility, halitosis (bad breath), and bone loss may occur. At this stage, we can control gum disease with regular periodontal cleanings, improved home care, and close monitoring of oral health. In some cases, surgical interventions or dental extractions may be required.

Customised Dental Cleanings

We begin with a periodontal evaluation to measure pocketing between teeth and gums and to identify bleeding points. We will then organise a treatment plan designed just for you. We will arrange a series of deep cleanings – including scaling and polishing to remove tartar and bacteria and promote the healing process.

We will educate patients on how to properly care for teeth and gums at home so that the infection stays controlled. Once patients have gum disease, they are more susceptible to future infections. A regular schedule for dental cleanings will promote a healthy smile, fresh breath and natural teeth retention. In some cases, more frequent visits, such as every 3 to 4 months, may be necessary.

We will discuss your treatment options and help you decide on an approach that works for your smile.
